Sailors are fine-tuning their boats for the up-coming 11th Samui Regatta 2012, 26 May to 2 June.Organised by Regattas Asia, the Samui Regatta 2012 should attract 500 worldwide participants.
Races will be held off Chaweng bay on the east coast of Samui Island with the Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui acting as race headquarters for the week-long regatta.
As there are no marina facilities on the island, most of yachts will anchor in the bay directly opposite the hotel.
This year, crews and boats have registered from 20 nations including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia and the United Kingdom.
The eight-day event has five days of racing, a warm-up day and a reserve day (in case of bad weather) closing off with gala party and award ceremony on day eight.
Entry fees for boats start at Bt12,5000 inclusive of the skipper’s fee and Bt3,500 for additional crew members. Registration must be made by 28 May. Application forms can be downloaded at http://www.samuiregatta.com/.
According to the host, last year’s event generated tourism-related revenue of Bt13 million although the net benefit to Samui was estimated at Bt30 million.
The Samui Regatta was launched in 2003 as the Tropical Island Regatta. Last year, the event attracted 40 boats with approximately of 500 participants from over 20 countries worldwide. The regatta is the final event in the Asian Yachting Grand Prix Championship, a series of five-star race events hosted in Asia.
