Koh Samui is getting ready to welcome its newest must-visit restaurant, KOH at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, a new dining destination offering authentic local cuisine and great wines. Located amid a plantation of coconut palms and cooled by breezes from the Gulf of Thailand, KOH Thai Kitchen & Bar offers a setting and ambiance like nowhere else on the island.
Designed by architect Bill Bensley of Bensley Design Studios, the restaurant makes the most of its position on a palm-covered hilltop on the northwestern tip of Koh Samui by providing an open-sided, open-air dining venue that is at one with its surroundings, while offering a contemporary space that is distinctly Thai in style.
Helmed by Executive Chef Alex Garés, KOH’s kitchen is a creative workhouse for authentic Thai cuisine with flavours that speak for themselves. Going back to the roots of some of the island’s favourite dishes, Garés and Sous Chef Sumalee Khunpet, also known as Chef Jeab, have come up with a menu that is at once authentic and straightforward, but that also introduces less familiar Thai recipes and flavours.
Says Garés, “We’re taking a step back to the roots of Thai cuisine to offer dishes that aren’t what you’d normally find at your local Thai restaurant, but that feature genuine, clean flavours that come from top quality local products. Many of our recipes have their origins in southern Thailand, and we’re excited to bring the genuine flavours of the islands to our guests through the cuisine at KOH.”
With a strong focus on seafood and with many products sourced locally, the dinner menu includes items such as local oysters with hot tamarind leaves, crispy shallots, garlic and lime; raw prawns with lime and chili; and tom kati talay coconut soup with seafood, tamarind and kaffir lime leaves. Meat-eaters should try the grilled quail marinated in curry with eggplant; dry red curry with chicken, cashew nuts, sweet basil and lime leaves; and slow-cooked pork trotters with five spice, pickled cabbage and kale. And vegetarians aren’t forgotten here, with a separate menu available including dishes such as wok-fried bindweed with garlic and egg; and straw mushroom salad with Thai herbs, cracked rice and chili powder. Additional meat cuts and barbecue items are also on offer, cooked the local way over burning charcoals. The menu changes every three days, meaning that guests will be able to experience exciting new flavours throughout the course of the week.
Boasting the widest selection of Thai wines by the glass on the island as well as a carefully curated menu of more than 50 Old World and New World labels, KOH Bar is the perfect place to lounge on an oversized sofa, sip a glass of wine, and gaze out over the azure gulf below. Classily choreographed cocktails are also on the menu, and wines have been selected to match the Thai dishes, opening up a whole new world of taste experiences. With copper wine walls, a dramatic onyx bar, and steel-and-rattan chandeliers inspired by birds’ nests, KOH Bar is Koh Samui’s newest hangout for those in the know.
Designed by Bensley Design Studios, KOH captures unmatched views of the Gulf of Thailand and the distant islands. KOH is open to the elements, making the most of its hilltop location amid palm trees that make up what was once a coconut orchard. High ceilings and natural Thai materials complement the surroundings, allowing the ocean breezes to flow freely.
Says architect Bill Bensley, “KOH is unique on the island as we’ve designed the restaurant and bar to let the natural breezes from the Gulf of Thailand flow, and we’ve created a space without unnecessary adornments that obstruct the sheer beauty of the natural views. The restaurant has a contemporary Thai design feel, with inspiration coming from traditional Thai motifs. The restaurant is transformed from a casual dining venue in the daytime to a place of drama as the sun sets and day turns to evening.”
KOH at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui will be open daily for lunch and dinner from mid-December 2013.
